"There has been a huge exchange of gunfire at BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) headquarters complex this morning. We have heard mortar fire," Nabojit Khisa, a local police chief, said on Wednesday. Reports Aljazeera.net
Official sources told AFP that the eruption of the gun battle coincided with a meeting of senior Bangladesh Rifles officers and that the battle appeared to be the result of a problem within the security force and was not a coup d'etat.
Witnesses said they saw army troops moving toward the headquarters as flames rose from the complex and big blasts were also heard.
"The shooting started in the BDR headquarters in the city's Pilkhana area around late morning and hundreds of shots were heard from areas around it," a resident told Reuters by telephone.
BDR spokesman Sajjad Haider said "trouble has been going on but I have no details immediately."
Traffic came to a halt on nearby streets and panic spread across the capital as private televisions reported the gunfire. Reports Reuters
