BRAC's BDmail Network Declines Wimax Licence in Bangladesh


BDmail Network, winner of the Wimax License of Bangladesh on September 2008 has declined a licence to operate Wimax in Bangladesh by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission(BTRC), the regulatory body of Bangladesh Telecommunication Network.

"BRAC BDmail will not pay for the licence. They informed us in a letter," BTRC chairman Monzurul Alam told bdnews24.com Saturday.

As per guideline of open auction of wimax license, BTRC invited BRAC BDMail Network to pay the License fee of Taka 21.5 Million, but BdMail sent the letter to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission that they will unable to pay the license fee to Operate Wimax Service in Bangladesh.

Company named "Aguree Wireless" was the third licence winner in the open auction in September and the fourth winner of action is named "Vitel Bangla"

"If BTRC invites us, we will pay for the licence." Abdus Salam, consortium member of Vitel Bangla, told benews24.com:

Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited will also apply for the remaining licence, said a BTCL official.

According to the licence guidelines, WiMax operators will initially have to install 90 base stations and expand their network within three years. More than 60 percent foreign investment will not be allowed, though non-resident Bangladeshis may invest 70 percent.

Broadband Solutions Ltd, an ISP of Bangladesh found to be indeed terminating calls illegally in Bangladesh.

Last week BTRC drive a raid against illegal VoIP operators raided different establishments of Broadband Solutions Limited's Banani, Shantinagar and Molibagh in the city and found evidences of use of the bandwidth in illegal call termination.

The BdNews24.Com Reports:

M Tanjin Alam, the company's managing director, and Zahurul Islam Sheikh, the CEO, confessed to interrogators that they were indeed terminating calls illegally, the commission officials said.

"BTRC officials therefore have sealed their establishments on charge of violating the conditions and instructions stipulated in the licence," the commission officials said, adding they also seized equipment used for the illegal activities.
